Mac Clones (Mac OS Compatible Systems): PowerComputing
PowerComputing, one of the largest and best known MacOS-Compatible manufacturers, sold Cold Fusion, Catalyst, Tsunami, and Alchemy-based MacOS systems worldwide from April 1995 to December 1997.
On September 2, 1997, Apple purchased PowerComputing's "core assets" for $100 million in Apple common stock which included "the right to retain key employees with expertise in direct marketing, distribution, and engineering, Power Computing's customer database, and the license to distribute the MacOS."
PowerComputing continued to sell MacOS-Compatibles until December 31, 1997, and then went out of business because of difficulties entering the Wintel market. Former members of management had plans to start a new "PowerComputing" but it would have sold Wintel-based PCs, and essentially been a completely different company.
