Mac clones that used the 68040 processor were first released in 1995 and were discontinued the same year. It was used in a single unauthorized Mac clone from a company called Cutting Edge.
The 68040 processor was used from February 1993 to April 1996. Notable Macs to feature the 68040 processor include the Quadra 840AV -- the fastest 68k-based Mac -- and the PowerBook 550c.
