Where can you purchase MacOS 9?

From time-to-time MacOS 9 install CD-ROMs also will appear for sale on a variety of online auction sites as well from vendors of varying quality.

Where can you download software updates for MacOS 9?

Apple's Knowledge Base once provided (archived links follow) a handy summary of the available updates for MacOS 9. Of particular interest, this support document notes that you "must install all prerequisite software before installing any update".

For example, to update a Mac with MacOS 9.0 to MacOS 9.2.2, you must download and install updates in this order:

  1. MacOS 9.1 Update
  2. MacOS 9.2.1 Update
  3. MacOS 9.2.2 Update

Pre-G3 based Macs that are capable of booting MacOS 9 only officially support MacOS 9.1 although hacks are available that make it possible to install MacOS 9.2.2 on some with pre-"NewWorld" ROMs. Apple recommends that you install the last version that your Mac will officially support.

Other Apple Knowledge Base articles also note that there are some differences between the downloadable update of MacOS 9.1 and the MacOS 9.1 install CD and that MacOS 9.2.2 provides improved compatiblity with MacOS X.

How do you install the MacOS 9 "Classic Environment" on a PowerPC-based Mac?

Apple's Knowledge Base also once provided brief instructions on how to "Install MacOS 9 to use Classic Applications" on PowerPC-based Macs that did not ship with the MacOS 9 "Classic Environment" pre-installed. Please note that the "Classic Environment" is not supported on PowerPC-based Macs running MacOS X 10.5 "Leopard."

For other scenarios, the process of installing the MacOS 9 "Classic Environment" or a "bootable" MacOS 9 "over" a current MacOS X installation may be a bit more involved. An archived blog posting from the now defunct MacFixIt blog has detailed tips and instructions that you may find to be useful.
