Apple Watch Series 0 Sport (Aluminum, 38 mm) Specs
Identifiers: Watch Sport 38mm - MJ2T2LL/A* - Watch1,1 - A1553 - 2870*
All Apple Watch Models
Apple explains that the Apple Watch Sport is "an incredibly accurate timepiece, an intimate and immediate communication device and a groundbreaking health and fitness companion" that is required to be paired with an also carried iPhone 5 or newer for most functions.
All Apple Watch devices are controlled with a "Digital Crown" and the Retina caliber displays include "Force Touch" capability that can differentiate between a light tap and a heavier press for more navigational possibilities.
Battery life is an Apple estimated "up to 18 hours" overall, but more specifically "up to 3 hours" of talk time, "up to 6.5 hours" of audio playback or working out, "up to 48 hours" of use as a watch (using it 20 seconds per hour), and "up to 72 hours" of low power "Power Reserve" usage. It charges via a custom inductive charger with MagSafe capability which is made of plastic for this model rather than metal like the higher-end models.
Designed as a more budget friendly option compared to the "regular" and "Edition" models, this particular original Apple Watch, the "Sport" model in the 38 mm size, features a 272x340 display with "strengthened, lightweight Ion-X glass" packed in a 7000 series anodized aluminum housing with a composite back and "hard coated optical polymer lenses" that connect to the charger.
There originally were five specific configurations of this Apple Watch Sport that vary by finish and band. With a silver colored aluminum body, Apple originally offered a white, blue (pictured, left), lime green, or pink "fluoroelastomer" rubber "Sport Band" and with a dark "Space Gray" aluminum housing, Apple originally offered, and continues to offer, a black "fluoroelastomer" rubber "Sport Band" (pictured, right).
On September 9, 2015, Apple discontinued three options -- the silver colored aluminum body with blue, green, and pink Sport Bands -- and introduced four different ones -- a silver colored aluminum body with orange or blue Sport Bands (this blue option is a bit more aqua colored) and a Rose Gold colored aluminum body with a light purple "Lavender" Sport Band and a gold colored aluminum body with an "Antique White" Sport Band.
On January 4, 2016, Apple introduced two "special" models for Chinese New Year available in China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Singapore, and Malaysia. These models are offered with either a silver colored or gold colored aluminum body and a red Sport Band and were sold until February 22, 2016.
Finally, on March 21, 2016, Apple discontinued two more options -- the silver colored aluminum body with Blue and Orange Sport Bands -- and introduced seven new ones. These new options include a silver colored aluminum body with Yellow, Apricot, and Royal Blue Sport Bands; a silver colored aluminum body with a Pink Woven Nylon band; a Rose Gold aluminum body with a Royal Blue Woven Nylon band; a Gold aluminum body with a Gold/Red Woven Nylon band; and a Space Gray aluminum body with a Black Woven Nylon band.
It was discontinued altogether on September 7, 2016.
