Where can you purchase the original setup CD-ROMs for the iBook?
Please be sure to identify your exact iBook model prior to calling so that the representative will be able to ensure that the replacement set of CD-ROMs will be compatible with your system.
How can you visually differentiate between the various "white" iBook systems?
If you have immediate access to the system, and it will boot, you can select "About This Mac" under the Apple menu for more information. If you are limited to visual differentiation, however, -- with 23 different "ice white" iBook systems which all look very similar (if not identical) -- identification can be a challenge.
The first item of differentiation is to determine whether it is a "G3" model -- which simply are labeled "iBook" or an iBook G4 which are labeled as "iBook G4". There are 13 white iBook G3 models and ten iBook G4 models. You also can easily determine if a model has a 12-inch or 14-inch display. There are nine 12-inch iBook G3, four 14-inch iBook G3, four 12-inch iBook G4, and six 14-inch iBook G4 models.
Beyond that point it becomes more difficult. The Apple Support Site provides a modestly helpful article called "How to Identify iBook Models," although it actually just confirms that there is no way to visually distinguish different 12-inch iBook G4 or 14-inch iBook G4 models from one another.
This support document does provide hope for those attempting to visually identify iBook G3 models, however. Good luck!
The iBook series is capable of running Windows through emulation using a program like Microsoft Virtual PC 7, but it cannot boot Windows or run Windows via virtualization like the Intel-based Macs.
If you need a system capable of running Windows, you would be best served with an Intel-based Mac or a Windows PC.
For more on running Windows on Intel-based Macs, please also check out the Windows on Mac Q&A.
Yes. Adelie Linux is supported on the iBook.
