Do iPad mini models support Apple Pencil? Which Apple Pencil models are compatible with which iPad mini models?

All iPad mini 5 and later iPad mini models are compatible with Apple Pencil. Earlier iPad mini models are not compatible.

iPad mini Models Compatible with Apple Pencil

If you are not sure which iPad mini model you have, a straightforward way to identify each is by its Model Number located toward the bottom on the back of each device:

* The Apple Pencil (USB-C) attaches magnetically to the side of iPad mini models with this capability but it only charges via a physical USB-C connection.

Specific Apple Pencil Compatibility

Specifically, the iPad mini 5 models support the original Apple Pencil that charges via Lightning Port.

The iPad mini 6 models support the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen that charges more conveniently via a magnet connection on the side of these iPad mini models as well as the slightly cheaper Apple Pencil (USB-C) that you can attach magnetically, but not charge magnetically.

Finally, the current iPad mini A17 Pro models support the most expensive Apple Pencil Pro, which essentially is a refinement of the Apple Pencil 2nd Gen. This new "Pro" option has additional input options that mostly will be of interest to digital artists (like being able to roll the barrel to change the orientation of shaped pen and brush tools). These iPad mini models also support the Apple Pencil (USB-C) for those who would like to save US$50 and who do not mind the more awkward charging method.

Apple Authorized site sponsor Adorama sells all Apple Pencil models -- the original Apple Pencil, Apple Pencil 2, Apple Pencil (USB-C), and Apple Pencil Pro.
