What are the "pros and cons" of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max models compared to one another? Is one the right iPhone for me?

Whether one of the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, or iPhone 17 Pro Max models is the best iPhone for you is a personal decision, but a quick -- and objective -- pros and cons can help you make the best choice.

iPhone 17 Pros:

  • Expensive, but less expensive than the iPhone 17 Pro or iPhone 17 Pro Max.
  • The same high quality "Super Retina XDR with ProMotion" 120 Hz display with "Always On" capability as the more expensive iPhone 17 Pro.
  • The same 5G support, Dynamic Island, Apple Intelligence capability, and Camera Control button as the more expensive iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max.
  • Very good battery life.
  • 256 GB minimum storage standard.
  • Five attractive, subdued color options -- Black, White, Sage (Green), "Mist Blue", and Lavender (left to right).
  • Quality dual lens rear cameras.
  • Dual SIM/eSIM standard (eSIM only in some markets, including the US).
  • Industry-standard USB-C port.
  • Complete support for iOS 26, the current version of the iOS, including the Apple Intelligence feature.

iPhone 17 Cons:

  • Less RAM than the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max (8 GB instead of 12 GB). In practice, this means not only a bit slower performance, but also potentially shorter support for the current version of the iOS.
  • Rear camera is not as high quality as the camera in the more expensive iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max models and support for the more professional ProRAW and ProRes formats is not provided.
  • Storage tops out at 512 GB, which could be a limitation for heavy video users.
  • No physical Nano SIM on models sold in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Japan, Saudi Arabia, and a handful of other countries.
  • Relatively slow USB 2 (480 Mb/s) transfer speeds over USB-C.

  • Three color options -- the subdued Silver and "Deep Blue" as well as the more bold and brash "Cosmic Orange".
  • LiDAR capability.
  • Impressive, high-quality triple lens rear camera system.
  • ProRAW and ProRes support.
  • "Studio quality" four-mic array.
  • Dual SIM/eSIM standard (eSIM only in some markets, including the US).
  • The option of as much as 1 TB of storage on the iPhone 17 Pro and 2 TB on the iPhone 17 Pro Max.
  • Fast USB 3 (10 Gb/s) transfer speeds over USB-C.
  • More durable back than the entry-level iPhone 17.
  • Complete support for iOS 26, the current version of the iOS, including the Apple Intelligence feature.

So, should I buy an iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, or iPhone 17 Pro Max?

Compared simply to one another, and even ignoring other models, it can be a difficult decision between the iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max.

The entry-level iPhone 17 is at least US$300 less than the iPhone 17 Pro and US$400 less than the iPhone 17 Pro Max. The iPhone 17 has the same high quality display type and size as the more expensive iPhone 17 Pro and is the best option for most people, accordingly. The iPhone 17 Pro Max has a bigger display and correspondingly larger dimensions, as well.

However, the extra money for the upgrade to the "Pro" model of either size gets you (1) a much more advanced rear camera with support for more professional capabilities and file formats, (2) a bit better performance and an extra GPU core, (3) more RAM (which could mean longer future iOS support), (4) a bit better battery life, (5) a more durable back, (6) faster USB 3 charging over USB-C, (7) a better mic, and (8) LiDAR support. At additional cost, you also have (9) the option of more storage.

For most users, it likely will come down to whether or not the better camera is worth the extra money. The other improvements are nice to have, but probably not enough to really justify the expense. For those on a bit of a budget, and who are not professional photographers or videographers, the iPhone 17 is the best option.

Of course, for those on a budget, any number of used iPhone models are well worth considering, also.
