Non-mirrored dual-display capability also can be added to a "Wallstreet" or "PDQ" PowerBook G3 with an IXMicro ix3D RoadRocket. This expansion card was discontinued long ago, but the always excellent AccelerateYourMac has some information. Site sponsor OWC also continues to host drivers for this product.

What type of video out port do the PowerBook G3 models have? Can the PowerBook G3 operate properly with the lid closed?

With the exception of the PowerBook G3/250 (Original/Kanga) -- which has an HDI-15 port -- all PowerBook G3 models have a VGA port to connect to an external display or projector. 13.1-Inch and 14.1-Inch "Wallstreet" and all "PDQ" models also have an S-video out port.

The original PowerBook G3 "Kanga" as well as the "Wallstreet" and "PDQ" PowerBook G3 models cannot operate with the display "lid" closed, as too much heat is generated to allow for proper ventilation.

According to Apple, the "Bronze Keyboard/Lombard" PowerBook G3 series and later models, generate far less heat than earlier models, and can operate properly with the display closed.
