Who designed the Power Mac G4 Cube?
Apple's industrial design for the last several years has been performed entirely in-house by Apple's Industrial Design Group, led by Jonathan Ive.
If you are interested in industrial design, you might like to track down the long ago out of print AppleDesign: The Work of the Apple Industrial Design Group. This book has hundreds of full color photographs of vintage prototype Apple products that were never released and is an interesting look into the evolution of Apple's style.
Was the Power Mac G4 Cube the first "cube" Apple system?
For all practical purposes, the Power Macintosh G4 Cube was the first and only "cube" system released by Apple. Depending on how precise you would like to be (as the Power Macintosh G4 Cube is 2.1 inches taller than it is wide or deep), you could argue that that Apple never has released a cube. You alternately could choose to argue that the clear plastic portion of the bottom of the case "doesn't count" and therefore it is more-or-less a cube.
However, the subsequently released Mac mini is a "cuboid" shape, and before Apple purchased the company, NeXT released the cube-shaped NeXTcube. The NeXTcube was generally regarded as a failure, but was said to be before its time. One Mac clone maker -- MaxxBoxx of Germany -- also released a series of large cube-shaped Mac clones.
What are the default configurations of the Power Mac G4 Cube?
For the default configurations of the Power Mac G4/450 Cube and G4/500 Cube, please refer to the specs page for the model of interest.
Is it true that the Power Mac G4 Cube never was discontinued?
According to press release, Apple announced that it would "suspend production of the Power Mac G4 Cube indefinitely" on July 3, 2001. Officially, the company maintained a "small chance" that it could "reintroduce an upgraded model" but for all practical purposes it was discontinued at that time.
Where can I buy a Power Mac G4 Cube?
There are any number of places to purchase a used Mac, although the Power Mac G4 Cube can be a challenge to track down on the used market. It primarily remains of interest to collectors these days.
