The Apple Xserve G4/1.33 DP Cluster Node features dual 1.33 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processors each with the AltiVec "Velocity Engine" vector processing unit, 256k "on chip" level 2 cache and 2 MB "backside" level 3 cache. It shipped standard with 256 MB of PC2700 DDR SDRAM, a 60 GB (7200 RPM) Ultra ATA/133 hard drive, and a single10/100/1000Base-T (Gigabit) Ethernet in a 1U case that fits in an industry-standard 19" rack.
Designed to be "clustered" in quantity with a standard Xserve as a "head node", the Xserve G4/1.33 DP Cluster Node allows multiple systems to be used together for intensive computing tasks, but has a single drive bay (instead of four), a single Gigabit Ethernet port (instead of two), and no optical drive or video card to cut costs (Apple sold it for US$2799, the same price as the single processor Xserve G4/1.33). Like the "head node" Xserve G4, this model has two full length 66 MHz, 64-bit PCI slots, but lacks the one half-length 66 MHz, 32-bit combination PCI/4X AGP slot.
The Xserve G4/1.33 DP Cluster Node shipped with a ten user version of MacOS X Server 10.2.4 -- instead of an unlimited user version -- and custom server monitoring software pre-installed. Custom configurations also were available.
Despite the age of this system, site sponsor Other World Computing has RAM, hard drives, SSDs, and other upgrades available for this specific Mac while supplies last.
