What are the default graphics cards provided with the "2019" Mac Pro? Which graphics card options are available? How do you upgrade the graphics card(s)?

The default graphic card in the "2019" Mac Pro is the AMD Radeon Pro 580X, which has 8 GB of GDDR5 memory and provides up to 5.6 teraflops of single precision performance.

Via custom configuration, this model also can be equipped with the following AMD Radeon Pro graphics cards:

  • Radeon Pro W5500X
  • Radeon Pro W5700X (1 or 2)
  • Radeon Pro Vega II (1 or 2)
  • Radeon Pro Vega II Duo (1 or 2)
  • Radeon Pro W6800X (1 or 2)
  • Radeon Pro W6900X (1 or 2)
  • Radeon Pro W6800X Duo (1 or 2)

These graphics cards differ accordingly in terms of performance:

Radeon Pro Memory Single Precision Half Precision
580X 8 GB GDDR5 5.6 teraflops --
W5500X 8 GB GDDR6 5.6 teraflops 11.2 teraflops
W5700X 16 GB GDDR6 9.4 teraflops 18.9 teraflops
Vega II 32 GB HBM2 14.1 teraflops 28.2 teraflops
Vega II Duo 2 x 32 GB HBM2 28.2 teraflops 56.4 teraflops
W6800X 32 GB of GDDR6 16.0 teraflops 32.0 teraflops
W6900X 32 GB of GDDR6 22.2 teraflops 44.4 teraflops
W6800X Duo 2 x 32 GB of GDDR6 30.2 teraflops 60.4 teraflops

These graphics cards differ accordingly in terms of display support and connectivity:

Radeon Pro Display Support Internal* External Ports
580X 6 4K; 2 5K; or 2 6K 4 DisplayPort 2 HDMI 2.0
W5500X 4 4K; 1 5K; or 1 6K 2 DisplayPort 2 HDMI 2.0
W5700X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
Vega II 6 4K; 3 5K; or 2 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
Vega II Duo 8 4K; 4 5K; or 4 6K 4 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6800X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6900X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6800X Duo 8 4K; 4 5K; or 6 6K 4 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0

*These connections support the internal Thunderbolt 3 ports.

By default, the graphics card uses a Mac Pro specific MPX module that occupies slots 1 and 2. If a second graphics card is configured at the time of system purchase, it occupies slots 3 and 4.

Upgrading the existing graphics card or installing a second one is straightforward. Apple provides this video that demonstrates the process of installing a MPX module in the "2019" Mac Pro:

When configured with graphics cards other than the default, the Mac Pro can support more, or fewer, displays:

Radeon Pro Display Support Internal External Ports
580X 6 4K; 2 5K; or 2 6K 4 DisplayPort 2 HDMI 2.0
W5500X 4 4K; 1 5K; or 1 6K 2 DisplayPort 2 HDMI 2.0
W5700X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
Vega II 6 4K; 3 5K; or 2 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
Vega II Duo 8 4K; 4 5K; or 4 6K 4 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6800X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6900X 6 4K; 3 5K; or 3 6K 2 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0
W6800X Duo 8 4K; 4 5K; or 6 6K 4 DisplayPort 4 TB 3, 1 HDMI 2.0

It is quite clear that all of these graphics cards support a large number of displays.
