First introduced with iPadOS 18.1 in 2024, Apple Intelligence refers to Apple's collection of "artificial intelligence" related features that generate, remix, edit, and transcribe text, audio, and images as well as implement various actions across applications.
As first implemented in iPadOS 18.1 and continuing with its predecessor -- iPadOS 26 in 2025 -- Apple Intelligence functionality remained uniform across compatible iPads, but this started to diverge with iPadOS 27 in 2026.
Accordingly, note the following regarding Apple Intelligence compatibility:
- Not Compatible -- an iPad is capable of running a version of the iPadOS that offers Apple Intelligence functionality (iOS 18.1 or later), but the iPad does not support Apple Intelligence at all.
- Fully Compatible -- an iPad is fully compatible with all offered Apple Intelligence functionality regardless of iPadOS version (iPadOS 18, iPadOS 26, or iPadOS 27).
- Mostly Compatible* -- an iPad is compatible with Apple Intelligence, but when running iPadOS 27, it does not support the "most powerful on-device model".
- Variably Compatible** -- lower-end configurations equipped with less storage and RAM do not support the "most powerful on-device model" provided by Apple Intelligence, but higher-end configurations eqipped with 12 GB of more of RAM -- which have more storage, as well -- do provide such support.
